Dr. Carl Sagan writes that our century is devoted to the short-term and rarely considers the long-term, "There is no guarantee that we will be wise enough to understand our planetwide closed ecological system, or to modify our behavior in accord with that understanding."
Whether we like it or not, our planetary lives are intertwined. One of our great needs is greater scientific research and "less technological restraint." It is up to us, and it should not be too great a task. Birds do not foul up their nests. Shrimps with lint-sized brains know it. "Algae know it. One-celled micro-organisms know it. It is time for us to know it too."
