In John Bunyan's Pilgrim's Progress...

In John Bunyan's Pilgrim's Progress there is a place called Beulah Land, a place where there is pleasant sunshine and great beauty. It is a resting place for pilgrims before they cross over into the Celestial City. The name is derived from the King James Version's translation -- or rather, un-translation -- of the Hebrew names given in Isaiah 62:4, "neither shall thy land any more be termed Desolute: but thou shalt be called Hephzibah, and thy land Beulah." Some modern translations make clear that Hephzibah means "My Delight Is In Her" and Beulah means "Married." Both Hephzibah and Beulah used to be fairly popular feminine names but have now, for whatever reason, fallen into disfavor -- and some say the same fate has befallen the values of "my delight is in her" and "married."
