Robert Louis Stevenson wrote, "It is the mark of a good action that it appears inevitable in retrospect."
Jesus' actions seem so right that from a two thousand year retrospect we are tempted to think he was predetermined to do everything he did. Since they prove to be inevitably so, assuredly they must have been inevitable for him also. We forget the incarnation.
Out of the good at work in his will and deed came the "good news" on which we inevitably stand.
-- R. L. Stevenson in Aphorisms, op.
cit., p. 253
