"Our commonwealth in heaven" is provocative imagery. It is not intended to draw our attention away from planet earth and its problems, but it is designed to point to what is of ultimate value and supreme importance. Earth is intended to bask in the light that comes from that commonwealth, even as the field of wheat basks in the warmth of the sun.
Centering instead on "earthly things," we prove T. S. Eliot right:
Endless invention, endless experiment,
Brings knowledge of motion, but not of stillness;
Knowledge of speech, but not of silence ...
All our knowledge brings us nearer to our ignorance,
All our ignorance brings us nearer to our death,
But nearness to death no nearer to God.
