Abram asked God for a sign that he would possess the land. God told him to take several sacrifices and cut them in two in preparation for an ancient covenant ritual. The sign came in the voice of God, no doubt as Abram was in a heightened state of awareness.
The important fact (The Interpreter's Dictionary of the Bible, "Covenant" C 2, c) is that Yahweh made the covenant. This is in line with the sovereign nature of God's several covenants with his people.
A simple fact may escape us here. Abram prepared the sacrifice. God made the covenant, but Abram made himself and the ingredients of sacrifice ready for the event.
Though we do not usurp God's role in our redemption, we do show a forerunner of faith by getting ourselves and whatever other things are needed ready for the eventful meeting with God.
