Am I fulfilled? That question...

"Am I fulfilled?" That question has become a major preoccupation. People are constantly asking themselves whether their jobs are fulfilling, whether their marriages are fulfilling, even whether their retirement is fulfilling. Based on the answers they give to such questions, important and far- reaching decisions are made.
The question appears to be a comparatively recent one, historically speaking. It implies a situation where people have a choice. It is difficult to imagine people of other times or places, say a nineteenth century coal miner or a pioneer woman, even asking the question. With no choice, you did what you had to do.
Likewise, the question by its very nature is one which almost always will be answered in the negative. Because it is based on choice means that to choose for one thing means also to choose against something else. Every choice we make means the negation of some other opportunity.
There is only One who is truly fulfilled, who fulfilled not only his own potential but also all expectations that had been laid down about him.
