Growing up in south-central Illinois, Mickey discovered that most of his friends read the sports page of the newspaper primarily to check out the win-loss record of their beloved St. Louis Cardinals. Back then, Stan Musial was a god and all others paled in comparison, according to Mickey's friends.
But Mickey worshiped at the temple of Ernie Banks and the Chicago Cubs. So, while the Cardinals were busy enjoying one pretty respectable season after another, the Cubs were succeeding at staying away from the World Series.
In the years since, rooting for the Cubs has been a lonely job for Mickey, but somebody had to do it. There have been good times and bad. But through it all, Mickey has been encouraged and motivated by the conviction that someday, somehow, the forces of good will triumph and the Chicago Cubs will win the World Series. God and his son, Daniel, will smile and be glad.
