The hypocrisy of particular Christians...

The hypocrisy of particular Christians has been well-documented in the history of the church: the excesses and persecutions of the church against its dissenters in the Middle Ages; the rabid slaughter of the American Indians which was supported by most new-world Christians; the acceptance of slavery by both the Northern and Southern churches; the seemingly endless war between the Protestants and Catholics in Northern Ireland; the age-old violence in the Middle East between Arab, Christian, and Jew; and the never-ending skirmishes between denominational groups which proliferate like weeds in an unkempt garden. In the eyes of many, there certainly seems to be little love among those who call themselves lovers of God and followers of the Man of Peace.
Yet, appearances can be deceiving. While the noisemakers get the attention and create the headlines, individuals who truly love have made, and are making, a considerable difference in the world; Saint Peter, who was able to rise above his prejudices and become a "solid rock" for God; Saint Francis of Assisi, who demonstrated piety, humility, and concern for his fellowmen; John Wesley, who expressed his religion by living it, with his tireless preaching and ministry to the masses; Martin Luther, with his rebellion against the corruption of the church in his day; Martin Luther King, Jr., who died not only for equality, but for peace; Mother Teresa, Desmond Tutu, and thousands of others too numerous to name, whose deeds of love are recorded in the mind of God.
