It would be great to say I owe no one and no one owes me. But, life isn't like that. We are not neatly packaged somewhere in separate parts of the universe. We are interrelated. We need others and others need us. Indebtedness arises out of these human needs. Unfortunately, some indebtedness is out of greed, that is, careless stewardship. The Bible instructs us, however, to "owe no one anything, except to love one another." (Romans 13:8a)
Indebtedness as a result of greed is synonymous with living in fear. "For if you live according to the flesh you will die, but if by the Spirit you put to death the deeds of the body you will live ... For you did not receive the spirit of slavery to fall back into fear, but you have received the spirit of [adoption] ..." (vv. 13, 15) Fear violates the human spirit. Through Christ we are adopted as sons and daughters of God, wherein we become heirs to the Kingdom. As sons and daughters of God, we are led by God's Spirit and surrounded by God's love, which casts out fear.
