Sallman's portrait of the Christ...
Illustration
Sallman's portrait of the Christ as the Good Shepherd has been reproduced in great numbers. It has been cherished in thousands of Christian homes because it was a very placid version of Jesus as the Good Shepherd. Jesus stands tall in beautiful robes carrying a lamb and leading the flock that appears to be content as they stay close to him in a lovely colorful valley. That portrayal of the Good Shepherd suggests that kind of serenity the writer of Psalm 23 wrote into that hymn of confidence and trust in God's presence.
