We can sympathize with Simon...

We can sympathize with Simon who in effect says to Jesus, "This is just great. Let's stay here." We cannot go back to the Transfiguration but I think this is an important part of the story. We must go on. We generally do not link this to the Transfiguration, but we know it as "the good old days." We want to stay as romantic as newlyweds, we do not want our church changed, we want to maintain emotional and religious "highs."
Those who have had a good experience of a church camp remember how emotional the last day is when one has to leave great new friends. But in more ways than one, one has to leave the camp.
Imagine how a college basketball coach would react if his players, having won their conference about now, came in to say, "Coach, we don't want to practice. We just want to think about how great it was to win the conference."
