At the time of the transfiguration, Jesus must have known something was about to happen. He took his closest disciples with him up the mountain. The transfiguration was external. The disciples saw it. The transfiguration hinted at the total change at Easter. Though Jesus may not have known what the change would be, he perhaps trusted that it would happen.
Change that affects us through and through does not happen until we have prepared and are ready for it. A veil of mystery and uncertainty clouds our perceptions. However, when we are ready, the veil lifts. We see the truth.
When life-transforming change comes, we change. A friend says, "There's something different about you. I see it in your face and in the way you walk. I hear it in the sound of your voice. Something has changed about you."
When we have struggled and come to terms with our lives, an expectant feeling emerges. Though we cannot define it precisely, we trust it. Though preparation on our part is necessary, its coming is also external.
This change may come in the form of an idea, a sense of new direction or renewed meaning. We have such a hope; we are bold. This change comes as a gift, a sign, a blessing, a deep reminder of God's present care.
