Lately I've been trying my hand at a few woodworking projects. One of the magazines I receive is full of great ideas with complete instructions. Drawings with exact measurements are provided, together with a complete parts list so that I can get by with just one trip to the lumber yard. Since I'm a beginner at this, I build projects just for the sake of learning.
Two months ago there was a set of instructions for building a pair of very solid looking sawhorses for my workshop. These were no ordinary sawhorses. There were compound angles to cut, which made the project look fairly challenging. So, I went to work.
Several times I made incorrect cuts on the lumber for the legs. Each time I would set my jaw with determination and try again. As a result I wound up with sawhorses that are not only wobbly, but very short. How I wish I could have taken that messed up lumber and put it all back together so that I could start over, kind of like the potter and the clay. But you can't do that with lumber because lumber isn't malleable and it's too rigid.
There's much to be thankful for in this Jeremiah text. Our Creator God is the potter, and he shapes us lovingly. He reshapes us just as lovingly so that we become in his hands what he intends for us to be. I can imagine the process is painful if we're too rigid!
