Appearances can be deceiving. Naaman was not impressed by the Jordan River, preferring the rivers of Damascus instead. No doubt, neither would the muddy, mighty Red River of the North have impressed him as it meanders along the border of North Dakota and Minnesota, flowing northward for over 500 miles into Lake Winnipeg, Canada. With a clay bottom, the Red River is extremely murky and very unappealing. It has the appearance of a very dirty river. However, clarity should not be equated with cleanliness. The Red River is one of the top 25 purest rivers in America. Catch some river water in a bottle, let the sediment settle and it will be as clear as bottled water. Fish in the Red River are huge and healthy; among the best in the entire Great Lakes Region. Naaman was cleansed by the clarity of God's promise that was immersed in such an unappealing place as a foreign river.
