Trained scuba divers are mindful of the necessity of the "buddy system." Recreational scuba diving requires that one dive with another person who can provide air or other assistance. Scuba equipment is designed to include an extra demand regulator. This feature provides the opportunity for one diver to share air with another in the event that diver should run out of air or become incapacitated. Trained instructors advise that "buddies" should be of similar skill levels and experience. Also, they suggest that they should dive at similar depths and remain close to one another in order to remain aware of the other's condition.
