The transformation to freedom from being treated like a slave is profound. In the classic William Wilder film, Ben Hur, a similar transformation occurs. Though wrongly accused, Judah is convicted and sentenced to tenure on a Roman slave galley. During a battle with Carthaginian pirates, the vessel sinks. Judah is able to escape from the hold and rescues the Roman admiral, Quintas Arrius. The admiral is weighed down by his armor and cannot swim. Despite the admiral's intentions to commit suicide, so convinced is he that the battle has been an utter defeat, Judah restrains him.
