One of the most abiding images of overwhelming affection comes near the conclusion of Steven Spielberg's 1987 film, Empire of the Sun. The movie is based on J. G. Ballard's autobiographical novel about a boy, James Graham, whose life of privilege is overturned by the Japanese invasion of Shanghai on December 8, 1941. The boy is separated from his parents in the confusion and taken to the Soo Chow internment camp. The scene where the boy and his mother literally have their hands wrenched apart by the press of the crowd fleeing the Japanese soldiers is especially heart-rending.
