Dan was always dressed immaculately. He was an extrovert who was a self-professed authority on most everything. He had the ability to turn any conversation to revolve around him. If anyone had accomplished something great, Dan had a story in which he had done it greater. If anyone had helped someone, Dan had a story in which he had helped even more. In short, Dan was an impressive boor.
As his reputation grew, so did Dan's ability to tell stories about himself. One other thing grew as well: disbelief. People began to get this "glazed-over" look in their eyes whenever he spoke. His boorishness led people to do just the opposite of what they did on the old E. F. Hutton commercials ... "When Dan spoke, no one listened."
