There is scholarly debate about whether Nero set fire to Rome. Suetonius says he did, describing how the unfortunates who lost their homes fled into the tombs for safety. While some were rounded up and killed, many Christians took up residence in the catacombs, an escape from terror not unlike the escape from another monarch centuries before, whose chariots were bogged down in the sea, which drowned them.
