After the infamous golden calf...

After the infamous golden calf incident, Moses had to work hard to change God's mind, avoiding the angry destruction of the idolatrous children of Israel. Changing the mind of an angry individual can require all the skill and persuasion a capable leader can muster. Lord North, the English statesman, demonstrated it on one memorable occasion. The Prince of Wales had just gotten into another of his famous fights with his father and decided to ask North to act as mediator. Having accomplished the requested pacification, the prime minister wrote a summary of his success in a note to the Prince of Wales. In it he said, "Do in future conduct yourself differently -- do so for God's sake, do so for your own sake, do so for your excellent father's sake, do so for the sake of that good-natured man Lord North, and don't oblige him again to tell your good father so many lies as that good-natured man has been obliged to tell him this morning."
