They seemed like the perfect family. Paula and Phil were high school sweethearts, were married, and had three adorable children. Paula was a stay-at-home mom, delighting in taking care of her young children, participating with them in special activities. Paula wanted her children to experience what she felt she was deprived of while growing up. Phil had a demanding job that prevented him from being with his family as much as he might have wanted.
Then one day, to the shock of family and friends, Paula and Phil separated. Family and friends offered support as well as advice. At first Paula withdrew from her family and friends, suffering from mild depression. Her sisters talked with her, affirming her. They told her that she had many good years left and needed to look to the future. Church members rallied, watching her children, bringing groceries, and making minor repairs to their home.
After some coaxing from her family and support from church members Paula enrolled in a local community college, realizing for the first time that she would have to forge ahead with a new life for herself and her children. People in the church watched her children so she could attend class.
Paula moved from the pits of despair to change, to viewing the tremendous possibilities of her future. Our lesson reminds us that no matter how bad things are Christians have hope for a new and better day.
