The Associated Press reported on November 26, 2004, that merchants in the Anaheim Town Square shopping center were dismayed to learn that, for the second year running, the traditional "Jingle Bell Jump" in which Santa parachutes into the shopping center, was to be canceled. The reason? A post-9/11 federal law restricting airspace around nearby Disneyland -- which officials fear could be a target of terrorists. The merchants had to be content with a hot-air balloon tethered to the ground, out of which the "right jolly old elf" emerged to greet his admirers.
Everybody loves a splashy entrance -- at Christmas, or any other time. Yet Jesus' arrival into the world -- despite Luke's account of angel choirs -- was anything but splashy. Only the shepherds heard those angels. Only the Wise Men saw the star. To most observers, the cry of a newborn in a cowshed behind the Bethlehem inn was the most ordinary thing in the world.
In truth, his entrance was far more astounding than Santa's "Jingle Bell Jump" -- though that would become apparent only much later.
