Often there is a "conditioning for obedience" which becomes every parent's goal for a child's discipline. A certarn tone of voice, a harsh directive may condition a child to obey without question ... for the sake of life. A parent's word and tone may shout, "Don't move!" A saving word must be obeyed there might be a snake on a path, a car careening around a corner, a baseball line drive, a menacing wasp. If the child obeys, the saving work and word of the parent are realized. Old Testament episodes like Jonah call for obedience and seeing the saving work of God in such disciplines. The New Testament proclaims a God who yet embraces and loves us while we were yet disobedient.
