The rainbow following the Great Flood should not be dismissed as a naive sign to a primitive people. As a reminder of God's covenant it transmits a powerful truth. Any beginning student of physics knows that a rainbow is a refraction of light broken down into its constituent parts which, in this case, are colors. What we learn about light -- its speed, its intensity, its constancy -- is made possible by studying its colors.
The New Testament says that God is light. In the story of the rainbow, God is revealing his personality -- all his true colors if you will -- for the first time. The moods of God are stretched across the heavens for all to see.
By giving the rainbow God said, "Sometimes you make me sad, sometimes you make me mad, and sometimes you make me glad. But even though I will not let you off, my rainbow is a sign that I will not let you go."
During the season of Lent we see the ancient sign again, but this time in the human spectrum, God's new rainbow, Jesus Christ our Lord. We are to study its colors with care if we are to see the Father.
