Little girl: "If you want to play with me you'll have to give up Gail."
Daughter: "But I don't want to give Gail up. Or you. Can't I be both of your friends?"
This little conversation actually happened between our daughter and her little friend. Strange isn't it that out of the mouths of babes oft times comes the truth.
Making choices was the first gift given to God's creation. The choice between good and evil became the hallmark of the new "man." It was no minor endeavor that launched Adam into his human role.
The classic question pertaining to making choices is: "Whom shall we serve?" Answering rather resolutely is Joshua when he affirms, "... Choose this day whom you will serve ... but as for me and my house, we will serve the Lord." (Joshua 24:15)
So what are the choices? They really come down to two. One is this world. The other is God. In this situation or in choice making, you cannot have your cake and eat it too. "No one can serve two masters; for either he will hate the one and love the other, or he will be devoted to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve God and mammon." (Matthew 6:24)
The reason? "Do you not know that friendship with the world is enmity with God?" (James 4:4)
