My professor of pastoral theology was as close to a saint as any man I have met. He seemed to have it all -- wisdom, humor, inner peace, spiritual strength ... He had all the qualities I felt I needed. I idealized him to the point of thinking his qualities were unreachable. I think we all have someone like that in our lives.
One day in class we were discussing death and funerals. The discussion turned to the professor and what he would want at his funeral. The subject changed again to what he would do if his wife died. He described how he would display her sewing rather than have flowers surrounding hen. Suddenly he began to cry.
In that instant, I saw my professor not as weak, but as very human. I knew that he was not unreachable. He knew how I felt and what I was struggling with myself. He could understand my weakness. I knew that what I had identified as ideals were indeed reachable. It was a great gift he had given the class. Yet how much greaten a gift that God has given his Son. He has been tempted in every way and knows exactly how we feel. That is why we can draw near to the throne of grace with confidence. Our High Priest knows us.
