Recently a young man very much in search of himself and a vocation sat in my study. Looking vigorously for his integrity, his life-goal, and most of all, something meaningful between himself and God, the searcher asked me, "What is it that fulfills you as a pastor? What offers you compensation?" My response was: "Little things -- at least what you might consider little. What many would measure as insignificant is often what makes my ministry worthwhile for me." I used this illustration. Several weeks ago we were in the process of completing an adult instruction class in preparation for communing membership for this group of adults. One class member was sharing his reaction to our class discussion of Holy Communion. After he shared the fact that the meaning of the Holy Eucharist had now become particularly clear and important to him, he exclaimed with the enthusiasm that only an adult convent has, "And I can't wait!" That "little thing" made my day. And to that new believer the Hebrews writer says the whole rest of God is waiting for him!
