Last Halloween the street sign...

Last Halloween the street sign at the end of our block was reversed, designating the intersecting Elm Street and Gladys Street in the opposite order. For months, puzzled newcomers would knock at doors they thought were the correct ones. The residents of the streets also spent months wondering why so many people were confusing the streets. It was only in early spring that
one homeowner noticed the sign change. Those who had been in the neighborhood the longest never bothered to look at their own street signs!
John the Baptizer came to Israel, a Jew, preaching familiar words to a people schooled in the prophetic tradition. Yet, tragically, many heard and did not respond to the most important sign of all in their vicinity. Do we hear the words of faith close to us which call for repentance and change, new life and a new focus?
