An English author, social critic...

An English author, social critic, and atheist, acidly commented on an attempt by a number of denominations to form a broad based ecumenical organ ization. "During the blitz of London I saw 10 drunks come out of a pub. They were hanging onto each other for dear life. If any one of them fell down they all fell down!" In response to such severe criticism, one who was no more charitable suggested that the critic was devoid of even a drunk friend upon whom he could lean. Whether it was that comment which affected the change one can only speculate, but the atheist converted to Christianity and became an eager advocate of strengthening the ecumenical Body of Christ.
