Isaiah was not a draftee...
Illustration
Isaiah was not a draftee; he was a Volunteer. God didn't say, "You go." Instead, God said, "Who will?" And Isaiah replied, "Send me." He saw a need and offered himself to do something about it.
There was once a Chinese farmer who saw a need and did something about it. Working in his hilltop rice field, he saw the ocean suddenly withdraw, and knew that the withdrawal would be quickly followed by a gigantic tidal wave. Knowing too, that his neighbors working in the low fields would be swept away if they were not warned, the farmer set his own field on fire and furiously rang the temple bell. His neighbors in the lowlands, hearing the bell, and looking, saw the field on fire. Rushing to the hilltop to aid, as they thought, their stricken neighbor, they saw the mammoth wave sweeping across the fields they had just left.
Most stories illustrate one truth; this one illustrates many. Let us though, say just this about it. Too many are the people who, seeing a need, say, "Somebody ought to do something about that." But blessed are the few who seeing a need, act. Isaiah did. The Chinese farmer did. You and I can.
