A young minister had just assumed the duties of his new parish when he was called upon to conduct the funeral of one of the church members, a poor elderly widow with no living family members. Expecting a small group of mourners, the minister was greatly surprised to find the church overflowing with people who obviously were very much in distress over the woman's death. The minister spoke to the funeral director about the large crowd.
"If you had known Bessie, you would not be surprised," said the director. "She had no family of her own, so she adopted most of the community. She sat with the sick, took care of the children, fed the needy, and gave herself to every task where she was needed. You see, she was not simply called Christian, she was one."
