The disciples are told to stay until they have "the power from on high." In the autumn of 1989 the Supreme Soviet met in Moscow. Gorbachev smiled at the 470 deputies and pointed with pride to both ends of the hall where there were giant projection screens suspended. Gorbachev said, "Let's try out our new machines," referring to the electronic voting system installed during the summer recess. He gave the signal and there were audible clicks -- but nothing happened. Finally, they resorted to the traditional cards. Afterward Gorbachev insisted they stay to show that the system would work. This time the technicians remembered to turn on the power. And us, do we try to do things under our own power or do we ask for a power from on high?
