Colleen is a college student who got a summer job working in an expensive jewelry store. Only the town's most wealthy people shop there. The experience is teaching her a great deal about wealth and how people relate to what they own.
"I was amazed," she told her pastor. "Some of those people spend most of their time fretting about their stuff. They give hours each week to keeping their valuables protected, insured, polished, and in good repair. Some have confided in me that they regularly miss a night's sleep worrying about their jewelry being lost or stolen. I had always thought that the more you have the happier you would be. I have discovered that is not necessarily true."
Indeed, Colleen has discovered one of the great truths of possessions: it is not what you have that is important. It is what you think about what you have. All of life is a gift of God's to be used in service to God, self, and others.
Unfortunately, all of us are inflicted with at least a little of an illness commonly known as greed. The only cure for this sickness is learning to be generous. Unfortunately, because some of us have more of the illness than others. Consequently, some need a great deal more of this treatment than others.
