A dictum from the field...

A dictum from the field of interior design states that less is more. Paul is urging the Corinthians to give out of their abundance, not fearing they'll lose by doing so. What essential point had they missed? They had yet to learn that all things are equal in the economy of God. Their abundance could only be enriched by their freely giving from it; Paul was hoping they might re-learn the vocabulary of stewardship: not 'theirs' not 'ours' but the Lord's.
Your Place
Is your place a small place?
Tend it with care! --
He set you there.
Is your place a large place?
Guard it with care! --
He set you there.
Whate'er your place, it is
Not yours alone, but his
Who set you there.
(By John Oxenham, printed in The Treasury of Religious Verse, New York: Pyramid Books, 1966, p. 235.)
