David Livingstone was a 19th century British explorer. He helped to make the African continent known to the world. He is best known to most people because of a search for him conducted by Sir Henry Morton Stanley. When they finally met, Stanley spoke his famous greeting, "Dr. Livingstone, I presume." Livingstone went to South Africa in 1841 to convert the people there to Christianity, to try to stop the slave trade, and to explore the mysterious African continent. In 1956, he was surrounded by a hostile, angry group of natives. Then, an idea came into his mind.
