As we reflect on the cross, we need to hear verse 8, "Although he was a Son, he learned obedience through what he suffered." Beethoven surprised people when on his deathbed he said that if he had to give up all memories except one, he would pick disappointments. Beethoven felt that he had learned from his disappointments. Beethoven learned by suffering. In Warrenton, Mo., some people still talk about the exemplary life of President Ira Chiles of Central Wesleyan College. President Chiles came to the college in 1925 as a bachelor. For the next four years he occupied -- not a home -- but a room in a dormitory and took his meals in the college dining hall. He received less that $50 a year in cash ... less than a dollar a week. Looking back, President Chiles said, "I had some difficulties financially, but I cannot regret too much that I had them, because they taught me lessons also. I would willingly and gladly go through them again."
