Three children begged for a pet hamster. They promised they would take care of it and finally they got one. They named it "Danny." Two months later, when the mother of the children found herself doing all the cleaning and feeding of the hamster, she found a possible new home for it. When she told the children about Danny's prospective new home, she was surprised to see how well they took it. One child remarked, "He's been around here a long time -- we'll miss him." The mother replied, "Yes, but he's too much work for one person." Another child said, "Maybe if he wouldn't eat so much and wouldn't be so messy, we could keep him." But the mother was firm. "It's time to take Danny to his new home now," she insisted. "Go and get his cage." In tears, the children screamed, "Danny?" We misunderstood. We thought you said, "Daddy!" How common are misunderstandings! The word understand means "to stand under," to put yourself imaginatively in the other person's skin. Christ understands human nature because he stood under it.
