I have recently had the privilege of working with young pastors at a conference. These men and women were just three or four years out of seminary. The purpose was to provide some rest and relaxation for them and a context in which they might evaluate their ministry before major problems set in.
Amidst the pressures of parish life a number of these young ministers were beginning to wonder just who they were. Their identity was not as clear as it once was. By studying the Scriptures, praying, making use of journals and open discussion we who shared in the leadership of the conference sought to help the young pastors regain their sense of identity, not only as ministers but as Christians who had been baptized.
Just as Martin Luther when he was in despondency often returned to his baptism as a sign of assurance, even so we recall our baptism in the name of one risen and reigning Lord.
