Elijah caught up with the feeling that so often the people of God experienced, felt that God had left him -- alone. He wished for some great manifestation of God's presence such as an Isaiah might experience in the temple when all was filled with smoke and heavenly figures appeared. Maybe the mighty sorrocco was God speaking? When the earthquake struck surely God was in this cataclysm? The fire ball thundered to the ground but God was not in the fire. In the silence as he waited he heard a low murmuring sound. (a still small voice K.J.V.) Without drama or supernatural accompaniment God stood by his side.
A Scottish God-fearing elder who lived in the mundane world of life, who never felt that there was any epiphany for him, approached his minister on the subject.
"I have never seen a ball of light on the road as Paul did on the road to Damascus."
"Maybe no! Maybe no!" said the wise pastor, "But then, you see, you are not Paul!"
If the vision tarry wait for it.
