Several college students were discussing the sacrament of the Lord's supper in an interdenominational religious assembly. An argument erupted between the Catholic students, who believed in transubstantiation, and the Protestants, who accepted the rite as a symbolic one. After much give and take between the two factions, the campus minister, as leader of the discussion, interrupted with these words: "I understand little about this important sacrament, but I know Christ is the bread of life. I realize that his words declaring to be 'the bread of life' are symbolic, but I also know that his effect upon my life is not symbolic, but very real. When I was in a hospital, near death after an accident, I was given no physicial food except for the liquids which are normally given to all patients, and neither was I concerned with physical food. But I was extremely concerned about my spiritual condition! I called up on the name of Jesus and I was given great spiritual strength and assurance. At that moment I had no doubt that Jesus was the bread of life! And so, does it really matter whether we believe the bread of the Lord's supper is real or merely symbolic. The important thing is that we receive it in the correct manner as spiritual food from Almighty God!"
