Many years ago I heard a great deal about the great Dwight L. Moody. My parents and grandparents told of hearing him and how great a preacher he was. It was not until I became a minister that I learned about his life commitment.
He worked as a clerk in a shoe store in Boston, when he was found by a Sunday school teacher. After sharing the gospel with the young lad, the Christian teacher was pleased to have him accept Christ, and saw that he found a church home.
One Sunday the minister of that church said in his sermon: "If any person here would give every ounce of his life, every bit of his devotion, every degree of his love to God, he could start a revolution because God waits to see what he can do with one life totally committed to him."
Dwight L. Moody got out of his seat and walked down the aisle to meet the preacher. He said, "Preacher, I'll be that man." And God used him to touch the world because he had answered the challenge to totally commit his life to Christian service. Moody became famous as an outstanding evangelist, and was honored by kings and queens and many government leaders.
James and John wanted recognition by receiving the chief seats in Christ's kingdom. Jesus had to explain that true greatness only comes through service.
