Phillips Brooks (1835-1893) was influential as a peacher at Trinity Church, Boston. His writings include The Light of the World and the hymn "O Little Town of Bethlehem." He was made bishop of Massachusetts in 1891 and died two years later. His philosophy of life included encouraging all to become the very best they could be.
Here's one of my favorite quotes from his writings:
"The truest help we can render an afflicted person is not to take their burden from them, but to call out their best energy, that they may be able to bear the burden." -- Phillips Brooks
(Adapted to make for inclusive language.)
