Gandhi during his early adult years in South Africa showed an openness to the Christian faith. As a young lawyer he was invited into the homes of Christian families, and frequently he accompanied them to Sunday worship. What an opportunity to welcome a stranger! But Gandhi reported later that his expenience in church was not a good one. The sermons seemed dull to him. Even more so, the people themselves did not really seem inspired on enthusiastic about the Christian faith. Although he felt guilty when he dozed during the service, he was somewhat relieved to observe that others were doing the same. After a while he could take it no more, and he stopped attending Christian worship.
The opportunity to welcome a remarkable stranger into a genuine Christian community was lost.
Is not the task of the church not only to proclaim that Christ has broken down barriers that separate people and made us one in him but also to demonstrate such hospitality and reconciliation within the household of God?
