When the flame in a rocket engine is extinguished because the fuel is exhausted, it is called burnout. The word has been adopted to describe a person who is fatigued at his work, on frustrated in a cause, on exhausted in daily living. A person who suffers from "burnout" has depleted his physical, mental and spiritual resources without providing for their recovery. Christ recognized the possibility of burnout in the plight of his disciples. He said to them, "Come with me. We will go to a quiet place to be alone. There we will get some nest" (Mark 6:31, New Century Version). Although we know that the mind has power over the body, we sometimes forget that the body affects the mind. A weary, hungry body takes its toll on the mind. Georgia Harness, in her book The Dark Night of the Soul, said: "Nutrition is basic to spiritual as to physical health." In his play Macbeth (II, 2, 36), Shakespeare reminds us that sleep is the "balm of hurt minds, great nature's second course, chief nourisher in life's feast."
