It is a rare occasion when a televised football game proceeds without at least one glimpse of the sidelines where one on more players hold up their index finger signifying the belief that their team is number 1. In fact, many athletes live for the day when they can play on a team that is rated number 1. That number has a magical quality about it. For athletes and their fans it conjures up images of supremacy, conquest, and sweet victory after long, hard-fought games. To be branded number 1 means that you are the best of the bunch ... all others are runners up ... at least until next season.
But the number "1" can also mean positive exclusivity, unity and strength. It is in that light that Paul writes of one body, one spirit, one hope, one faith, one baptism, one God and Father. With Paul's number 1, we don't even need to consider the runners-up ... they are simply not important.
