There are two stories of "salvation" in a medieval town in Germany. Rothenburg on der Taub is a walled city, with cobblestone streets and a Lutheran church known for having a famous relic: a drop of the Holy Blood encased in a crystal jewel set in a wooden cross.
The first story of salvation is that of the town itself. The town was threatened with destruction during the Reformation. A wager was made. The town would be saved if one of the town fathers could drink 3 liters of wine in one gulp! The townsfold found one man who could do it, the town was saved, and the man had, "no ill effects except that he slept for three days."
The town was "redeemed" by 3 liters of wine? The town makes quite a fuss about this event -- with festivals and a glockenspiel tower featuring the bad guy with a sword and the savior of the town with a stein. What about the "precious blood of Christ," that Saint Peter reminds us, "redeemed" us from the empty way of life? The relic quietly above the altar reminds us of Christ's sacrifice. "... through him you believe in God, who raised him from the dead and glorified him, and so your faith and hope are in God."
