Prof. H. D. A. Major, in his commentary on this passage (Mark 1:40-45) in The Missing and Message of Jesus, wrote: "Pity, courage, decision mark the action of Jesus" (p. 48). But how often do we represent Jesus as "Gentle Jesus, meek and mild?"
In a Sunday school room in a little village church there were hanging a number of framed colored pictures. One was of Daniel, facing the lions with a calm and steady eye. Courage, character, and alertnesswere reflected in the face and bearing of this prophet of Israel. One Sunday a young lad pointed at Daniel and said, "I like him." Then he turned to a picture of Jesus who was represented in a long, flowing robe, carrying a shepherd's staff and a lamb resting upon his arm and with a retiring expression on his face. The young boy shook his head and remarked, "I don't like him; he's soft!" "Strong Son of God," wrote Tennyson, "immortal love, whom we who have not seen they face, by faith, and faith alone embrace, believing where we cannot prove."
