In C. S. Lewis' The Screwtape Letters, a young apprentice demon named Wormwood receives letters from his Uncle Screwtape on how best to win a human soul for the devil ("Our Father Below"). Each chapter is a letter, dealing with a different approach to undermining the "patient's" relationship with God. In one chapter, the subject is anxiously waiting to find out if he will be drafted in wartime. Screwtape's advice is to keep the man from realizing that it is impossible for everything he fears to happen, since the possible scenarios are mostly incompatible.
