Around the year 1000, the same number of years after Jesus as Solomon's father David lived before Jesus, there lived a king of England, Denmark, and Norway, named Canute (994-1035). They tell a story about Canute, that one day he was walking by the seashore, and as he was walking he was being flattered by some of his followers. He was the king of kings, the mightiest that reigned far and near. Canute listened with half an ear as each of his courtiers tried to outdo the others in praise of the king, until someone said that both land and sea were at his command. Canute sat on his cloak by the waterline; the tide had started to come in. He said. "Sea, I command you that you touch not my feet!" Just then the waves dashed against him. "You see now, my lords, what good cause you have to call me a king, that am not able by my commandment to stay one wave. No mortal man doubtless is worthy of such a high name, but one King which ruleth all." Canute, and Solomon before him, knew that the plans of the mind belong to man, but the answer of the tongue is from the LORD. Man proposes; God disposes. -- Mosley
