It was two weeks to...

It was two weeks to the end of the school year when three seniors decided to tempt fate and skip school. In these days skipping school earned a two-week suspension, no exceptions. So close to summer, a two-week suspension meant that final examinations would be missed before graduation. Stakes were high. The homeroom teacher noticed that the president of the senior class and his two friends were absent ... The principal called the class president's mother at her office. She reported that she last saw him leaving for school. She would call his father; they would find him. The principal's calls to the friends' homes resulted in one mother reporting her son home ill and an employee in the third home evading the principal's request to speak to a parent. The class president's parents scouted the local haunts and headed home, the agreed rendezvous point. Mother arrived first, to discover the three young men trying to repair their car which had broken down in front of the house! Father soon arrived and surveyed the scene. Leaving the two friends on their own, he delivered his son straight to the principal's office. "He is all yours now. We will abide by your decision." The boys had skipped school and others had lied to cover up their misbehavior. A two-week suspension was clearly mandated, but the principal couldn't help thinking about the couple who had told the truth and had been prepared to face the consequences with their son. The three graduated on time. -- Kelly
